چکیده

There are several results available in the literature dealing with efficient construction of t-spanners for a given set S of n points in Rd. t-spanners are Euclidean graphs in which distances between vertices in G are at most t times the Euclidean distances between them; in other words, distances in G are “stretched” by a factor of at most t. We consider the interesting dual problem: given a Euclidean graph G whose vertex set corresponds to the set S, compute the stretch factor of G, i.e., the maximum ratio between distances in G and the corresponding Euclidean distances. It can trivially be solved by solving the All-Pairs-Shortest-Path problem. However, if an approximation to the stretch factor is sufficient, then we show it can be efficiently computed by making only O(n) approximate shortest path queries in the graph G. We apply this surprising result to obtain efficient algorithms for approximating the stretch factor of Euclidean graphs such as paths, cycles, trees, planar graphs, and general graphs. The main idea behind the algorithm is to use Callahan and Kosaraju’s well-separated pair decomposition.

Approximating the Average Stretch Factor of Geometric Graphs

Let G be a geometric graph whose vertex set S is a set of n points in R. The stretch factor of two distinct points p and q in S is the ratio of their shortest-path distance in G and their Euclidean distance. We consider the problem of approximating the sum of all ( n 2 ) stretch factors determined by all pairs of points in S. We show that for paths, cycles, and trees, this sum can be approximat...

On Geometric Spanners of Euclidean Graphs and their Applications in Wireless Networks

We consider the problem of constructing a bounded-degree planar geometric spanner for a unit disk graph modeling a wireless network. The related problem of constructing a planar geometric spanner of a Euclidean graph has been extensively studied in the literature. It is well known that the Delaunay subgraph is a planar geometric spanner with stretch factor ; however, its degree may not be bound...

On Geometric Spanners of Euclidean and Unit Disk Graphs

We consider the problem of constructing bounded-degree planar geometric spanners of Euclidean and unit-disk graphs. It is well known that the Delaunay subgraph is a planar geometric spanner with stretch factor Cdel ≈ 2.42; however, its degree may not be bounded. Our first result is a very simple linear time algorithm for constructing a subgraph of the Delaunay graph with stretch factor ρ = 1 + ...

The Stretch Factor of the Delaunay Triangulation Is Less than 1.998

Let S be a finite set of points in the Euclidean plane. Let D be a Delaunay triangulation of S. The stretch factor (also known as dilation or spanning ratio) of D is the maximum ratio, among all points p and q in S, of the shortest path distance from p to q in D over the Euclidean distance ||pq||. Proving a tight bound on the stretch factor of the Delaunay triangulation has been a long standing...

Planar Hop Spanners for Unit Disk Graphs

The simplest model of a wireless network graph is the Unit Disk Graph (UDG): an edge exists in UDG if the Euclidean distance between its endpoints is ≤ 1. The problem of constructing planar spanners of Unit Disk Graphs with respect to the Euclidean distance has received considerable attention from researchers in computational geometry and ad-hoc wireless networks. In this paper, we present an a...
